North Carolina has had direct access since the Practice Act was revised in 1985 by the NC General Assembly. Direct Access allows you to receive physical therapy services without first having to obtain a referral from a physician or other healthcare provider.
What does this mean to you?
It means you do NOT need a referral to see a physical therapist. Even if your physician refers you to a physician-owned physical therapy clinic (as many do), you can still choose where you want to receive treatment.
Other Benefits of Direct Access
- Save money on your healthcare costs by skipping unnecessary visits to the doctor, unnecessary expensive imaging (X-Rays, MRIs, etc.) and unnecessary prescriptions, including dangerous opioids.
- Improved access to care and better health outcomes.
- Medicaid is even covered under direct access, but there are some provisions. Please click here for more info. If you have questions, please call us.
Physical therapists are movement experts. We will evaluate your condition and provide treatment that will help you recover to get back to your daily activities. If we notice something that needs a referral to another medical professional, we'll refer you to where you need to go for care. It's that easy!
